What Happens During a Workplace Noise Survey / Assessment?

LESH describes what you can expect from a professional noise monitoring session.

A noise at work survey involves a professional assessor measuring, recording, and analysing sound levels in the workplace to identify risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations. The process includes conducting walkthroughs, using personal dosimetry on employees to measure daily exposure, and handheld, high-precision sound level meters for specific machinery, culminating in a detailed report with recommendations for control measures.

Key Aspects of a Noise Survey:

Initial Assessment (Walk-through): The surveyor identifies noisy areas, processes, and equipment to determine the scope of the assessment.

Personal Noise Dosimetry: Selected employees wear small, shoulder-mounted devices to record their cumulative, personal exposure to noise throughout their shift.

Sound Level Meter Measurements: A professional uses a calibrated sound level meter to measure specific sound levels (A-weighted and C-weighted) and peak noises from machinery.

Observations & Interviews: The consultant observes work practices and talks to employees to understand typical noise levels during different tasks.

Data Analysis & Reporting: The collected data is analysed, comparing results against legal limits (e.g., daily exposure). A report is generated, offering practical recommendations for reducing noise, such as engineering controls or specifying suitable hearing protection.

Actionable Outcomes: The assessment determines if employees need to be included in health surveillance.

The survey helps employers, as noted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), understand if noise levels are harmful, such as when you have to shout to be heard 2 meters away.
