Competent Person Service — Outsourced Health & Safety Support for Your Business

Every business operating in the UK has a legal duty to appoint a competent person to help manage health and safety. This requirement is not optional — it is set out in Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and it applies regardless of the size of your business or the industry you work in. Whether you employ two people or two hundred, the law requires you to have access to someone with the knowledge, skills and experience to help you meet your health and safety obligations.

For most small and medium-sized businesses, employing a full-time health and safety manager is simply not practical or cost-effective. A qualified health and safety professional commands a salary of £45,000 to £70,000 per year — before you factor in employer National Insurance, pension contributions, training costs and recruitment fees. The LESH Competent Person Service gives you access to IOSH Chartered, NEBOSH-qualified health and safety expertise at a fraction of that cost, on a flexible retained basis that grows with your business.

What the LESH Competent Person Service Includes

LESH offers four levels of support — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum — designed to match the specific needs and risk profile of your organisation.

Our Bronze Partner package is ideal for businesses that already have the basics in place and need occasional expert external safety advice and guidance. You will have a named LESH H&S consultant acting as your competent person, accessible by phone and email, along with a certificate of engagement and regular health and safety updates.

The Silver Partner package is designed for businesses that need a comprehensive health and safety management system built alongside ongoing support. It includes two annual site visit, a tailored management system, policy review, toolbox talks, HSE document templates and access to an online resource portal.

Our Gold Partner package provides full health and safety and fire safety support, including four site visits per year, a complete health and safety management system, annual management system audit, fire risk assessment, fire safety management documentation and discounts on training. It is the most popular choice for businesses operating across multiple risk areas.

For businesses requiring the highest level of ongoing support, our Platinum Partner package provides everything in the Gold package with monthly site visits — giving you consistent, hands-on health and safety management throughout the year.

The prices shown are an example, based on a medium risk company with less than 20 staff, please contact us for quote.

If you have other needs, we can also agree a plan tailored just for you.

We can also provide support around Health and Safety governance for larger organisations who need a senior level overview of their systems, helping senior executives understand responsibilities, focus areas and priorities, bringing safety to the boardroom.

Why the Competent Person Requirement Matters

Failing to appoint a competent person is not just a legal risk — it is a practical one. Without proper health and safety support, businesses face the real prospect of workplace accidents, HSE enforcement action, civil claims, reputational damage, and the loss of contracts from clients who require evidence of competent health and safety management. SSIP schemes such as SafeContractor and CHAS, and clients across construction, facilities management and the public sector, will typically ask to see your competent person arrangements as part of pre-qualification.

Appointing LESH as your competent person gives you greater legal compliance, genuine expert support, and the confidence that your business is protected — so you can focus on what you do best. We will be your retained health and safety advisor, supporting your on your safety improvement journey.
