Fire Warden Training FAQ

1. What is fire warden training and why does my business need it?

Fire warden (also called fire marshal) training prepares nominated staff to take an active role in fire safety — helping to prevent fires, respond correctly if one occurs, and manage a safe evacuation. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the "responsible person" for a workplace in England and Wales must ensure adequate fire safety arrangements are in place, and appointing trained fire wardens is widely recognised as good practice for meeting this duty (similar duties apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland under their own fire safety legislation).

2. Who should attend the session?

Ideally, any member of staff nominated (or being considered) as a fire warden, fire marshal, or deputy. We'd generally recommend enough people to provide cover across shifts, floors, or departments, and to allow for holidays and absence. Line managers, health and safety representatives, and facilities staff also benefit from attending, even if they aren't formally designated wardens.

3. How long does the session last, and where does it take place?

The session runs for half a day (typically around 3 hours, including breaks) and is delivered at your premises. Running it on-site means we can tailor the training to your actual building layout, evacuation routes, assembly points, and fire safety equipment, rather than teaching generic scenarios.

4. How many people can attend one session?

We recommend a maximum group size of around minimm of 5 to and a max of 15 delegates to keep the session interactive and ensure everyone gets hands-on time during the practical elements. Larger workforces can be accommodated across multiple sessions.

5. What topics does the training cover?

Typical course content includes:

• Fire chemistry basics (the fire triangle) and common causes of workplace fire

• Legal responsibilities under UK fire safety legislation

• The role and responsibilities of a fire warden

• Fire prevention and workplace inspections

• Raising the alarm and evacuation procedures

• Assisting people with disabilities or mobility issues (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans)

• Fire extinguisher types and safe, appropriate use

• Post-evacuation duties (roll call, liaising with the fire service)

6. Is there a practical, hands-on element?

Yes. Where facilities allow, delegates get supervised hands-on practice using fire extinguishers (often via safe live flame, depending on venue restrictions and extinguisher availability) so they build genuine confidence rather than just theoretical knowledge.

7. Will attendees receive a certificate?

Yes, delegates who complete the session receive a certificate of attendance/competence, valid for the recommended refresher period. This can support your fire risk assessment documentation and demonstrate due diligence if ever required by enforcing authorities or insurers.

8. What do we need to provide or prepare beforehand?

Ideally, we'll need:

• A quiet training room or suitable space for the theory element, with seating for the group

• Access to fire extinguishers and evacuation routes for the practical walk-through

• A copy of your current fire risk assessment and fire action plan, if available

• Confirmation of numbers and any access/mobility requirements in advance

9. How often should fire warden training be refreshed?

We recommend refresher training every 12-24 months as good practice, in line with general HSE and fire authority guidance, or sooner if there are significant changes to your premises, evacuation procedures, or following a fire safety incident.
