How much does a Health and Safety Consultant cost?

It is one of the first questions businesses ask when they start looking for health and safety support — and it is a completely reasonable one. Budget matters, and understanding what drives the cost of health and safety consultancy helps you make a better decision about where to invest.

The honest answer is that costs vary considerably. A retained competent person service might start from several hundred pounds a year for a basic support package, rising to several thousand for a comprehensive service covering health and safety and fire safety with regular site visits. One-off services such as risk assessments, fire risk assessments, noise surveys, PUWER inspections and accident investigations are typically priced on a project basis, reflecting the time, expertise and complexity involved. At LESH, we are always transparent about pricing and happy to provide a bespoke quote based on your specific needs.

But before focusing purely on the number, it is worth understanding what drives it — because not all health and safety consultancy is equal.

Qualifications and Experience

The single biggest factor in the cost of health and safety consultancy is the level of qualification and experience the consultant brings. A NEBOSH-qualified, MSc Degree holding, IOSH Chartered safety professional with years of executive and hands-on experience across multiple industries commands a higher fee than someone with a basic qualification and limited practical background — and for good reason.

Chartered membership of IOSH is the benchmark of professional competence in health and safety. It requires a combination of formal qualifications, demonstrated experience and a commitment to continuing professional development. When you appoint a Chartered safety professional such as LESH, you are getting advice that has been tested, verified and held to a professional standard. When you appoint someone whose credentials are less clear, you are taking a risk — and in health and safety, the consequences of poor advice can be severe, and you are still ultimately responsible.

Specialisms

Some areas of health and safety require specialist expertise that goes beyond general consultancy. PUWER inspections and machinery safety assessments, for example, require a deep understanding of engineering principles and machinery guarding standards. At LESH we are Certified Machinery Safety Experts (CMSE) so are highly qualified with proven competence to conduct thorough PUWER inspection.

Workplace noise surveys require calibrated equipment and competence in exposure calculation. ISO 45001 implementation requires familiarity with management system standards and certification processes. Consultants with genuine expertise in these specialist areas will typically charge more than generalists — but the advice they provide is meaningfully different in quality.

Urgency

Like most professional services, urgency affects price. If you need a fire risk assessment before you can open new premises next week, or a full RAMS pack produced for a tender closing in 48 hours, that will cost more than the same work commissioned with a comfortable lead time. Planning ahead almost always costs less.

Why Cheapest Is Not Better

This is perhaps the most important point on the page. Health and safety consultancy is one of those services where cutting costs can be genuinely dangerous — not just professionally, but in the most literal sense.

A cheap health and safety policy found from an online document mill or AI will not reflect your business. A risk assessment produced by someone without adequate knowledge of your industry will miss the hazards that matter. A noise survey carried out with inadequate equipment or interpreted without proper competence will give you false confidence. And when something goes wrong — when there is an accident, an HSE inspection or a civil claim — the quality of your health and safety documentation and the credibility of the consultant who produced it will be scrutinised closely.

The HSE expects businesses to appoint competent health and safety support. Appointing someone on the basis that they were the cheapest option, without verifying their qualifications and experience, is unlikely to satisfy that expectation.

Good health and safety consultancy is an investment — in the protection of your workforce, the legal resilience of your business, and your reputation with clients and regulators. At LESH, our consultants are IOSH Chartered professionals with NEBOSH and Degree qualifications and real-world experience across a wide range of industries and sectors. We provide transparent, competitive pricing and tailor every package to the specific needs of your business.
