What is a Workplace Noise Survey?

A workplace noise survey is a systematic process of measuring and evaluating the levels of noise that workers are exposed to during their working day. Its purpose is to determine whether those noise levels are high enough to pose a risk to workers' hearing, and whether the business needs to take action to reduce exposure or introduce protective measures.
Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational health conditions in the UK, and it is entirely preventable. Unlike many workplace injuries, however, it develops gradually over time — often so gradually that workers do not notice the deterioration until significant and permanent damage has already occurred. This makes proactive noise monitoring all the more important.
A noise survey is carried out using specialist sound level meters and noise dosimeters — equipment that measures sound levels in decibels and calculates personal noise exposure over a working day. The survey will typically cover all areas of the workplace where significant noise is generated, and will assess the noise exposure of different groups of workers based on the tasks they perform and the time they spend in noisy environments.
The output of a noise survey is a report that identifies noise levels across the workplace, compares those levels against legal exposure limits, identifies which workers are at risk, and makes recommendations for the control measures that need to be put in place. These recommendations might include engineering controls to reduce noise at source, administrative measures to limit the time workers spend in noisy areas, or the provision of appropriate hearing protection.
At LESH, our noise surveys are carried out by experienced consultants using calibrated equipment, and our reports are written in plain English so that you understand both the findings and what you need to do about them. We do not just measure and report — we help you understand the results and take appropriate action.
LESH provide noise surveys, we are based in Nottingham but operate nationwide!
