Noise dosimetry is a method of measuring individual workers' personal noise exposure over the course of an entire working shift. Rather than simply measuring the noise level at a fixed point in the workplace, a noise dosimeter is a small device worn by the worker — typically clipped to the collar near the ear — that records the actual sound levels they are exposed to throughout their working day.

This approach is particularly valuable in situations where workers move between different areas of the workplace, carry out a variety of tasks with different noise characteristics, or have highly variable working patterns. In these situations, a fixed-point noise measurement may not give an accurate picture of an individual's true personal noise exposure. Dosimetry captures the full picture.

Whether you need dosimetry as part of your noise survey will depend on the nature of your workplace and working practices. For environments where workers remain in a relatively stable noise environment carrying out consistent tasks, a survey based on sound level measurements combined with exposure duration may be sufficient. For workers whose noise exposure is highly variable and unpredictable, dosimetry provides a more accurate and defensible measurement.

Dosimetry results are particularly valuable when assessing workers whose noise exposure is close to the exposure action values, because the accuracy of the measurement can determine whether legal duties to act are triggered. Where exposure levels are clearly far above or well below the action values, simpler measurement approaches may be sufficient.
